Comprehensive Eye Exams in Lakeville

It’s about more than just blurry vision:

A comprehensive eye exam is about far more than confirming a prescription. Because the eyes are connected to the rest of the body, a thorough exam can catch early signs of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and thyroid eye disease, sometimes before you notice any symptoms at all.

Dr. Amy Rudser and the team at Advanced Eye Care Professionals combine advanced diagnostic technology with an unhurried, education-focused approach, so every patient leaves understanding exactly what was found and why it matters.

A comprehensive exam goes well beyond a basic vision screening. During your visit, we evaluate:

  • Visual acuity and refraction to determine your exact prescription
  • Eye pressure and optic nerve health to screen for glaucoma
  • The retina and internal eye structures to check for disease
  • How your eyes track and work together
  • Signs of systemic conditions that can appear in the eyes, including diabetes and hypertension

Any findings are explained in plain language before you leave, along with next steps if further care is needed, such as our eye disease treatment services.

How often should I get a comprehensive eye exam?

Recommendations have changed recently. The American Optometric Association updated its adult guideline in 2024 to recommend annual comprehensive eye exams for all adults 18 and older, a shift from the previous every-two-year standard for lower-risk adults. Children should have their eyes examined at 6 months, at age 3, before starting school, and then every year or two through age 18, depending on individual risk factors. Anyone with diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or existing vision correction may need more frequent visits, which Dr. Rudser will confirm at your appointment.

What about contact lens exams?

If you wear or are considering contact lenses, a separate contact lens exam and fitting ensures your contacts fit comfortably and correctly, since contact lens needs are evaluated differently than glasses prescriptions alone. Dr. Rudser will review which contact lens options fit your prescription and lifestyle as part of that visit.

Bring your current glasses or contact lenses, a list of medications, and any specific vision changes you have noticed, even minor ones like occasional blurriness or headaches, to your appointment. If it has been more than a year since your last exam, scheduling a visit is the most reliable way to catch a developing issue early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in a comprehensive eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam goes beyond checking your glasses prescription. Dr. Rudser evaluates your overall eye health, including screening for conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and can often catch early signs of systemic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
The American Optometric Association updated its guidance in 2024 to recommend annual comprehensive eye exams for all adults 18 and older. Patients with existing eye conditions or a family history of eye disease may need to be seen more frequently, which Dr. Rudser will discuss with you at your visit.
Yes. A comprehensive eye exam evaluates your overall eye health and updates your glasses prescription, but fitting contact lenses requires additional measurements and a trial period to ensure comfort and proper fit. If you wear or want to start wearing contacts, our Lakeville team schedules a separate contact lens exam and fitting.
Please bring your current glasses and, if applicable, your contact lenses and their box or prescription information. It’s also helpful to bring a list of any medications you take and a summary of your family’s eye health history.
Dilation allows Dr. Rudser to get a clearer view of the retina and other internal eye structures, so it is often part of a comprehensive exam. Your vision may be blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours afterward, so plan accordingly, especially if you’ll be driving.
