TearCare® for Dry Eye Management in Lakeville

Tired woman sit at desk, takes off glasses to relieve eye strain after long laptop usage, suffers from eyestrain or dry eyes, having headache, massage nose bridge. Vision issues, on-line work or study

Has it been suggested to you to use over-the-counter tears and you do not feel any relief by using them?

Many people with Dry Eyes have poor-quality oil in their tears or not enough oil. The oil is produced by the meibomian glands in the upper and lower eyelids. When these glands malfunction, it is called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Because of that, artificial tears will temporarily boost the volume of tears along your lower lid margin but overall it will not feel like it really generates any real relief–certainly not sustained throughout the day.

What does TearCare treat?

TearCare System is a treatment for patients with dry eyes due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). It’s not the only thing that we use to address this but sometimes the meibum (oil) in those glands is so thick or stuck that it needs to be unclogged mechanically so that at home treatments are more effective.

What are Meibomian glands?

Meibomian glands go across the entire lid margin of our upper and lower eyelids and produce the oil layer on our tear film. A clogged or dysfunctional meibomian gland prevents the oil from being able to be released and ultimately mixing with the tears on the ocular surface so they don’t evaporate too quickly in between our blinks. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) will become progressively worse if left untreated.

TearCare is an advanced treatment for people whose gland dysfunction is the primary cause of their dry eye. TearCare heats the glands and we do an inoffice expression immediately after that to clear the unhealthy or stuck thicker oils from the glands. Dry Eye symptoms often improve quickly afterwards and a suffering patient will begin to experience real relief for the first time.

The TearCare procedure can be repeated if necessary and the frequency depends on the starting point of the gland dysfunction and how well it responds to the first treatment followed by at home maintenance care. At your eye exam we can help determine if this might be a helpful treatment for you. The first step is to schedule an eye exam.
