Understanding Dry Eyes

Dry eye affects millions of people, causing discomfort, irritation, and vision problems that can significantly impact daily life. It’s still significantly underdiagnosed but technology to identify it earlier has improved which means we can address it when it’s easier to turn it around and it’s easier to see improvement with treatment options when we need to start them.

Effective dry eye treatment requires identifying the root cause of your condition and developing a personalized treatment strategy that provides lasting relief. Our comprehensive approach combines the latest diagnostic technology with proven treatment methods, including IPL therapy, gland expression, prescription treatments, and customized care plans designed specifically for your needs.

How Do Dry Eyes Occur?

Dry eyes are often caused by more than just one thing. Various factors, including age, hormonal changes, meibomian glands not functioning adequately, certain medications, environmental conditions, screen time and underlying health issues can all contribute to the ocular surface not being the way it should be. The symptoms can range from mild irritation to constant severe discomfort that interferes with daily activities.

Many people rely on over-the-counter artificial tears, which may provide temporary relief but don’t address the underlying causes of dry eye. Our comprehensive approach identifies why your eyes are dry and targets those specific issues with appropriate treatments. This method provides more effective, long-lasting results than simply treating symptoms.

FAQ

How do I know if I have dry eye?

Common symptoms include burning, stinging, grittiness, watery eyes, blurred and/or inconsistent vision or just dry feeling in your eyes. These symptoms can also crossover to other eye conditions as well so in the mild stage it often gets attributed to other causes. A comprehensive eye exam is a good place to start to sort out the specific causes of your symptoms.

What is IPL therapy, and how does it help dry eyes?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy uses a triple light pulse through a specific filter to reduce inflammation and improve meibomian gland function. These glands are important because they produce oils that prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. IPL therapy helps restore proper gland function, leading to improved tear quality, stability and reduced dry eye symptoms. It’s especially helpful for rosacea patients.

How long does it take to see improvement in dry eye symptoms?

Treatment response varies depending on the severity of your condition and the treatments used. Some patients experience relief within a few days of starting treatment, while others may need several weeks to months to see significant improvement. We will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Are dry eye treatments covered by insurance?

Some treatments can be billed to medical insurance. Sometimes advanced treatments like IPL therapy, tear care expression and others may not be covered, but they provide significant benefits. We’ll explain all options and costs upfront.

Can dry eye be cured permanently?

Dry eyes are a chronic condition, however, it can be effectively managed with appropriate treatment, including some maintenance treatments done at home which can extend the effectiveness of in office treatments. Many patients experience significant long-term improvement with our comprehensive treatment approach. Ongoing management helps maintain comfort and improves daily activities.

What can I do at home to help manage dry eye symptoms?

We provide detailed instructions at home maintenance as part of your comprehensive treatment plan and the follow-up visits. But here are a couple of things that can really help: Practicing proper lid hygiene (see video about how to do this correctly and some FAQ/tips and tricks), taking frequent breaks from screen time, staying hydrated, and sometimes doing lid blinking exercises! Omega 3 supplements can help tremendously if they are high quality, in the right rTG bioavailable form and the right ratio of EPA/DHA (note: not all supplements are created equal!). We carry 2 different versions in our office that can really help with dry eyes–ask us more about it when you’re in the office!
