Dry Eye is a chronic condition and can have a significant impact on your quality of life, causing a foreign body sensation in your eyes as well as: pain, blurry vision, and dry or watery eyes. Untreated, it can even lead to further eye health complications.

Despite these constant detrimental effects on quality of life, many dry eye sufferers are not aware that they’re suffering from dry eye disease or that real treatments exist. Instead, they just live with the discomfort.

At Advanced Eye Care Professionals, our team of dedicated professionals is committed to delivering the most up-to-date and effective dry eye relief solutions. There are new solutions constantly being introduced into the market and some are better than others! We will keep up with those and implement new technology to help you achieve relief from dry eyes.

What Is OptiLight by Lumenis?

We’re proud to offer OptiLight by Lumenis to our patients, specially designed for dry eye management. OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, triple pulse, non-invasive treatment performed in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. It is the first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

How Does It Work?

OptiLight uses regular light, puts it through a specific filter to energize it (at a specific wavelength, which controls how deep or close to the surface of the skin it goes), creates a triple pulse to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease in the eyelids and helps increase meibomian gland (the oil glands in the eyelids) functionality.

This in-office procedure helps with multiple sources of potential inflammation in and around the eyelids, which makes it more potent and effective to jump start dry eye treatment for many patients. We will do a baseline dry eye evaluation first, which we will review together, to determine if IPL is the right solution for what is causing your dry eyes.

A course of treatment typically includes 4 sessions spaced 2–3 weeks apart. Once you have completed all 4 treatment sessions we will re-evaluate where the function and structure of the meibomian glands are and decide the frequency of followup intervals with some at home maintenance to help extend the effectiveness of the IPL treatment! Sometimes another IPL session is required, but this varies dramatically from patient to patient because of lifestyle choices, environments patients are consistently in on a daily basis, how compliant they are with at home maintenance and other medications they may be taking for other systemic conditions.

OptiLight treatment sessions typically take about 20 minutes to perform. The procedure is non-invasive and allows you to return to your daily life without any feelings of discomfort or obtrusive side effects. You’ll need to plan on not being in direct sunlight immediately after the treatment or for long periods over the first 48 hours (you can run errands if needed, but not sitting outside with the sun shining on your face!).

We’ll review other post-treatment recommendations before you start this if it’s appropriate for your dry eye custom treatment plan.

We'll Help You Know If OptiLight Treatment Is For You

While OptiLight by Lumenis is an effective dry eye management solution there are some flat out contraindications for this treatment. We will review those with you in person during the dry eye evaluation appointment to make sure you’re a good candidate.
